Geography, GIS and Sustainability Field Studies
The Geography, GIS, and Sustainability Field Studies Fund
provides students with hands-on, experiential learning experiences beyond the
classroom. Your support goes directly to students by helping fund study abroad
opportunities, student participation in local, regional, and national
conferences, and community-building activities like our annual department
camping trip and craft nights repurposing topographic maps.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we maintain a dedicated department van. This van allows students to attend conferences, connect with local organizations for professional experience, and engage in fieldwork. This includes projects like monitoring water quality on the Cache la Poudre River and collecting GPS data at the Poudre Learning Center.
As a donor, you play a vital role in shaping the next
generation of geographers, GIS specialists, and sustainability leaders, knowing
that your support directly provides students with hands-on learning
experiences, professional development opportunities, and a stronger sense of
community.
How will my gift be used?
During the 2024-2025 academic year so far, donor funds have been put to use in the following ways:
Course Field Trips: Poudre Learning Center, Weld
County Food Bank, JBS, Northern Water, Great Plains Environmental Learning
Center.
Conferences: GIS in the Rockies (Denver, CO), American Association of Geographers Great Plains Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting (Provo, UT), Colorado Water Center’s Water Workforce Summit & Career Fair (Denver, CO).
With your generosity during Bears Give Back, we will be able to continue and expand upon these opportunities!
Ryan Peiffer, '23, Geography with a concentration in GIS
“GIS in the Rockies was an awesome experience. We were
able to meet a variety of different GIS outfits and see what they were working
on, apply to jobs, and see some of the new technologies that were being
implemented in the field. The greatest part of the conference was getting to
see all the different presenters, and the wide range of projects that they had
worked on. Overall, GIS in the Rockies was an immersive experience into the
dynamic applications that the discipline of GIS provides.”
